Does my phone support eSIM?

A 30-second check before you buy.

Quick answer

Your phone supports eSIM if dialing *#06# shows an EID number. It must also be carrier-unlocked. Most iPhones from the XS and XR onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer support eSIM, with some regional exceptions.

Google
Pixel 3 and newer, not the Pixel 3a

How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?

Use one of these. A brand name is not enough.

Is my phone carrier-unlocked?

A phone locked to your home carrier will refuse this eSIM even when the hardware supports it. On iPhone, open Settings, General, About, and read Carrier Lock. It should say No SIM restrictions. On Android, ask the carrier that sold the phone, or try another SIM in it. Unlock it before you travel.

Which iPhones support eSIM?

iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer models support eSIM, including later numbered iPhones and the iPhone SE from the 2020 model onward. The phone must be carrier-unlocked.

Most iPhones sold in mainland China use two physical SIM slots and do not have eSIM. An iPhone bought there can be the same generation as an eSIM model from another country and still be unable to install this QR. Dial *#06# on that phone.

Which Samsung and Pixel phones support eSIM?

Galaxy S20 and newer S series phones, and recent Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold models, generally support eSIM. Some regional and carrier versions of the same model do not. The S20 FE and some phones sold by a single carrier are the usual exceptions. Check for an EID, or for Add eSIM in SIM manager, on the phone you will travel with.

Pixel 3 and newer support eSIM, apart from some carrier-locked versions. Pixel 3a does not. On a supported Pixel the path is Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, Add SIM.

Which phones usually do not support eSIM?

Recent higher-end Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, Motorola, and Sony phones often include eSIM. Many cheaper models in the same brand do not. If Add eSIM is missing and *#06# shows no EID, this plan will not install. Do not buy it for that phone.

Questions

What is an EID?

It is the number of the eSIM chip in the phone. Dial *#06#. If an EID is on that screen, the phone can install an eSIM, provided it is also carrier-unlocked.

Can I use this eSIM and my home SIM at the same time?

Yes, on phones that support dual SIM. Keep your home SIM for calls and texts, and use the travel eSIM for data. Turn Data Roaming on for the travel line only.

What if my phone does not support eSIM?

The QR will not install on it. Do not buy a plan for that phone.
